Religion and Social Struggles in Mexico

Saturday

  • Mexico City 
  • 12 – 5 pm: Arrival, Casa de los Amigos/Quaker House.  Time for settling in, finding lunch on your own
  • 5 pm: Gather in Conference room for introductions, snacks, brief orientation.
  • 6 pm-9 pm: Class on Mexican History, from Revolution to Globalization-- Ross Gandy
  • 9:30 pm: Dinner at Quaker House

Sunday 

  • 8 - 9 am: Breakfast-- Quaker House 
  • 9:30-11 am:  Orientation Safety, Logistics and Health
  • 11:00 am- 5 pm: Field Trip downtown (metro)
  • 12 pm: Mass at Cathedral
  • Free time, Lunch downtown (on your own). 
  • Places to visit: Palacio Nacional (Diego Rivera murals), Cathedral, Zocalo, Templo Mayor, Fine Arts Museum (entrance fees on your own)
  • 5 – 6:30:  Mexican meal prepared by chef Alejandro Martinez 
  • 6:30 –9 pm:  Class, History of Religious Movements in Mexico

Monday

  • 8-10 am: Beakfast-- Quaker House 
  • 10-1 pm: Class led by Dr. Pangerl and Colin Bossen
  • 1:30 pm: Depart for Ajusco-- lunch on the way 
  • 5-8 pm: Ajusco-- visit community center, history of community, discuss U.S.-Mexico relations, personal testimony of women community organizers and religious refugees

Tuesday 

  • 8 – 9 am: Breakfast and group check in-- Quaker House 
  • 9-7 pm: Anthropology Museum and Chapultepec Park.  Free time, explore museums, find your way around Mexico City, lunch on your own
  • 7-9 pm: Meeting: Julio Lopez, perspectives on urban organizing, social change and social movements in Mexico.

Wednesday

  • 8-10 am: Breakfast-- Quaker House
  • 10- 1 pm: Workshop, Privilege and International Solidarity-- Melissa Mundt
  • 2:30 pm: Depart for TAPO bus terminal (via metro and taxi).  Lunch on the way (on your own) We will provide snacks for the bus. 
  • 4:30 pm:   Travel to Chiapas

Thursday - San Cristobal, Chiapas

  • 8 am: Breakfast (with INESIN and Wisconsin Pastors)
  • 9 am: CODIMUJ, Catholic Women’s theology group,  opportunity for discussion
  • 2 pm: Lunch at INESIN  (Institute for Intercultural Studies)
  • Afternoon: free time
  • Evening: Walking Tour of San Cristobal 

Friday

  • 8 am: Breakfast at Posada 
  • 9 am: Depart  Acteal and Oventic (lunch in community)
  • Dinner in San Cristobal (on your own)
  • 9 pm: Group reflection, prepare for community stay-- Colin and Melissa

Saturday

  • 6:30 am: Leave Posada 
  • 7:30 am: Depart for Comalapa (we will provide snacks for the bus)
  • 12 pm: Meeting-- Uriel Perez, church based environmental activism and immigrant issues
  • 2 pm: Lunch at Comalapa Presbeterian Church 
  • 3:30 pm: Travel to Pakayal
  • 7 pm: Dinner, Meet community members (all meals in community will be provided by community.  Bring your own snacks or extra food) 

Sunday- Monday

  • Workshop on immigration issues (Melissa Mundt)
  • Share with community, assist with building autonomous clinic, attend worship with community.  
  • Time to visit and learn about community experience.

Tuesday 

  • 6 am: Depart Pakayal 
  • Opportunity to visit nearby tourist sites or free time in San Cristobal (optional trip to market, Mayan Medicine Museum, Nabolom)
  • 7 pm: INESIN party, sharing session with UCC group 

Wednesday

  • 8- 9 am: Breakfast at Posada
  • 10 am: Indigenous Theology, Petul, INESIN
  • 1 pm: INESIN- perspectives on religious organizing in Chiapas
  • 2 pm: Lunch at Chiapas Peace House 
  • Afternoon: Free Time (optional trip to Chamula, bioreserve,  other San Cristobal Museums, or other organizations)

Thursday

  • Sipaz, religious aspects to conflict in Chiapas 
  • 8:30 pm: Travel to Mexico City

Friday 

  • 11 am: Arrive Mexico City
  • Free time ( optional visit Basilica de Guadalupe)
  • 4-7 pm: Meeting-- David Fernandez Davalos, Quaker House
  • 7:30 pm: Dinner together in restaurant 

Saturday

  • 8 – 9 am: Breakfast, Quaker House 
  • 9 - 11 am: Concluding Session and Departure
