Melel Xojobal is accepting applications for volunteers to work with children in the summer of 2005. Volunteers would start working in July or August of 2005, and participate in one of their three programs with children:


  • Arrumacor:Daycare center for children 6 months to 4 years of recently arrived migrant women who work during the day.
  • Calles: On-site(s) program focused on children who work in the
    streets and/or markets of San Cristóbal. Program focuses on reading and
    writing skills with a strong emphasis on cultural identity.
  • Snail Chanvunal: Peace Education program presently working with
    fourth and fifth graders at one bilingual/trilingual (Tzotzil, Tzetal,
    Spanish) elementary school on the outskirts of San Cristóbal.


Requirements:

  • Minimum of six months or more (this is FIRM)
  • Excellent Spanish verbal and listening comprehension skills
  • Education and experience in working with children from
    marginalized populations, or knowledge and experience with
    anti-discrimination education and conflict resolution
  • Interest in "interculturalidad, educacion para la paz, estimulacion temprana, efectos de la marginalizacion sobre los ninos."
