New Chiapas Peace House Field Coordinator
Article written by Colin Bossen
As you may remember Alex and Rachel will be leaving the Peace House in
mid-June to return to the United States. We will miss them! (Though we
hope they will remain involved with the CPHP). Over the last few months the Peace House Board has been searching for just the right candidate to fill Alex and Rachel's rather large shoes. After sifting through more than 35 applications from 6 different countries we found her in the person of Melissa Mundt. Melissa wrote the following bio of herself:
"Melissa Mundt is inspired by and dedicated to the struggles of peoples world wide for social justice and human rights. A graduate in Latin American history from Macalester College in St. Paul, MN, she has travelled to Mexico, Bolivia and South Africa with human rights delegations and studied abroad in Oaxaca, Mexico. Last year, she worked with St. Paul based nonprofit, Indigenous Tourism Rights International, doing research for Indigenous communities trying to maintain their autonomy against the ever growing pressures of tourism. Part of this work took her again to Oaxaca, Mexico where she worked with the Oaxaca Indigenous Network gathering information on certification (organic, ecotourism, sustainable forestry, fair trade, coffee etc.) and how these systems are effecting (both positively and negatively) the community struggle for economic autonomy. Melissa has been living in Xalapa, Veracruz for the last three months studying community development and the Mexican enviro! nmental movement at the University of Veracruz. She looks forward to the new challenges and experiences of working for the Chiapas Peace House Project." Melissa starts on May 14th and we look forward to working with her over the coming months and trust that she will do a great job! -- Colin Bossen
