New Volunteer Opportunity: Sierra Norte Oaxaca

Article written by Melissa Mundt

A unique opportunity to work with youth in an indigenous community in the Sierra Norte of Oaxaca.  The community of Yavesia, in the picturesque Sierra Norte, is well organized around the issues of self determination, cultural regeneration, protecting their communal land and sustainable development and are seeking a volunteer to work with youth gathering and recording their own history and traditions and creating a book about local ecology and biology.  The volunteer would also likely teach english, computation and physical education and have the chance to collaborate with other communities who are working on community designed ecotourism projects.  Housing and food would be provided by the community.  Ideal candidates would be fluent in Spanish and have teaching experience.  Chiapas Peace House is assisting in the promotion and selection for this opportunity and will provide some orientation and support, but final acceptance decisions will be made by community members and the volunteer will mostly be working independently.  Contact info@chiapaspeacehouse.org for more information.
