Sept 2004, From the Editor
Article written by Melissa Mundt
September has been a month of hard work and celebration. With our now full crew of volunteers we've devoted group discussion time to the recent comuniques of Subcomandate Marcos, local and international news, and privilege and international solidarity. Everyone has been working hard getting settled into their new
organizational placements and preparing for the Peace House delegation
in October. Our co-founder Colin Bossen has been visiting San Cristobal
for several weeks this month and we've had many exciting discussions
about to goals and future of the Peace House, our challenges and
accomplishments, which I would like to share in this newsletter.
September 16th is also Independence Day here in Mexico, and we enjoyed
fireworks, festivities and friends. In a place like Chiapas, however,
"independence" is a sensitive subject. Peace House member, Kara, spent
the holiday in a Zapatista community that was celebrating the strength
of their community in resistance instead of the abstract notion of
patriotism or the unfulfilled promises and outright repression of the
Mexican state. As one good friend said, "I'll commemorate Mexican
independence when we have it." It is always important to celebrate hard
work however, and this month we remember the dedication of communities
in resistance, organizations in solidarity, and think about just how
far the Peace House has come.
