May 17th marks International Day against Homophobia. Over many parts of the world, LGBT communities organize and create events to bring awareness against homophobia. Here in Oaxaca, many LGBT organizations/groups are organizing various events throughout the entire month. These events range from documentary screenings from the late American activist Harvey Milk, public art exhibitions from local Oaxaquen@ queers, workshops on how to stand against homophobia and others forms of discrimination, and of course… a fierce King and Queen Drag show.       May 17th marks International Day against Homophobia. Over many parts of the world, LGBT communities organize and create events to bring awareness against homophobia. Here in Oaxaca; many LGBT organizations/groups are organizing various events throughout the entire month. These events range from documentary screenings from the late American activist Harvey Milk, public art exhibitions from local Oaxaquen@ queers, workshops on how to stand against homophobia and others forms of discrimination, and of course… a fierce King and Queen Drag show.       From what I have witnessed many Oaxaquen@ queers are making the LGBT community presence loudly visible though creating more queer spaces and setting up these types of events. Though, in Oaxaca de Juarez, it is a very conservative place where homophobia is greatly projected. With these events against homophobia, the LGBT community hopes to educate other Oaxaquen@s about the important of tolerance. That people’s different sexual orientations shouldn’t bring us apart, and that diversity can and should unify us. We can learn about each other’s struggles and together support one another in our community.

One very exciting event from the many is the Drag show performance. Drag shows in Oaxaca rarely happen and for this reason LGBT organizers thought it would be interesting to involve a Drag Show for the Homophobia campaign events. Anyone was invited to participate and be part of something as a form of protest and entertaining at the same time.  Women and men are performing and dressing up in whatever gender they decide they want to be.  Performances will include poem readings, skits, dancing, and cover songs performances. This event is welcomed to everyone, and free of charge.

All of these events will start from May 10th - May 22nd.  Flyers all over the city have been posted up, inviting anyone to join in on the activities and get to know more of the LGBT community that exists here. The LGBT community in Oaxaca wants everyone to be part of learning about the forms of protest to stand against homophobia. Next month also marks International Gay Pride Month.  Oaxaca also plans to have the second Pride March in the city.
