Caracoles: Celebration and Reflection
Article written by Colin Bossen
August 8, 9 and 10th, thousands of Zapatistas and Zapatista supporters
Ricardo Flores Magon (where a new training center for autonomous
education promoters was inaugurated) drew 2,000 to 6,000 people
for music, dancing and celebration. Festivities went without incident
except in the Caracol of Oventic where the electricity
was cut off.
And continuing a month of celebrating and reflecting on the structure
of the Caracoles, recently, Subcomandante Marcos, speaking for the EZLN
Command Committee, broke long Zapatista silence by publishing
communiques, August 19-24, discussing some of the shortcomings and
successes of the fledgling Juntas of Good Government. The communiques
bring to light some of the struggles with autonomous governing, and
cite the rarity of women in leadership positions in the Caracoles and
the continuing reliance on military structures as some of the
inadequacies in the new system.
