Comandanta Ramona of the EZLN Dies
The woman who commanded the EZLN's taking of the city of San Cristobal on the 1st of January 1994 died the morning 6th of January 2006.
The news of the death of Comandanta Ramona was made public that same day during the Otra Campaña meeting in Tonalá, Chiapas, by Delegado Zero(Subcomandante Marcos).
Ramona had been suffering from a terminal illness since 1994. In 1995, she received a kidney transplant, and thus stole another 10 years from death. On January 6th she awoke in a delicate state and passed away while being transported to San Cristobal.
Comandanta Ramona, a tiny indigenous woman, led the taking of San Cristóbal de Las Casas, Chiapas during the armed uprising of the 1st of January 1994. She was a woman who gave her life for the struggle of her people, and whose presence, despite her delicate state of health, was always felt.
The last time she was seen in public was the 16th of September 2005 at the plenary meeting for the "Other Campaign" in the Caracol of La Garrucha, where she made breif remarks to those attending.
Delegado Zero announced that the Otra Campaña would be suspended for 2 days while the delegation returned to the Caracol of Oventic to attend funeral services for the Comandanta.
