Human Rights Violations in San Cristobal Area
Article written by Monica Sandschafer
Authorities from the Ejido los Llanos, an indigenous community near San Cristobal, recently denounced the violations of human rights in their community following a prison outbreak.
In their search for the fifteen fugitives, police forcibly stopped and searched a number of community members, beating and detaining several illegally. One man reported that the police entered his store, threw him to the floor, and left with 20 sodas and over $300 USD from the cash register.
Kara Hartzler, Chiapas Peace House volunteer working with the Red de Defensores Comunitarios por los Derechos Humanos (The Network of Community Defenders for Human Rights), received these complaints and helped to prepare the statements for submission to the State Commission on Human Rights.
