Poverty in Mexico
Article written by Monica Sandschafer
According to a recent CNN report, the gap between the rich and the poor in Mexico is growing. The report, quoted in La Jornada, noted that fifty percent of the Mexican population lives in poverty, while ten percent of the poor survive on less than a dollar a day. Ten percent of the Mexican population currently lives in the United States and, in this year alone, contributed over $16 billion US to the Mexican economy, which prompted President Fox to laud them as "national heroes," though he had little to say about the root causes of this emigration. In spite of all this, Mexico is considered one of the richest nations of Latin America, in part due to the vast wealth concentrated in the hands of a number of multimillionaires. Mexico has more multimillionaires than Saudi Arabia, Switzerland or Taiwan. www.jornada.unam.mx
