January 2004 Newsletter
Article written by Alex Rocklin and Rachel Wallis
After spending New Years celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Zapatista uprising in the communities with dancing, plays and speeches, and then meeting with members of our board of directors in town for the celebration, the Peace House staff were ready for a rest. We've spent the past several weeks getting back down to the day-to-day business of the house, as well as preparing for the delegation to Chiapas in March with the Mexico Solidarity Network (space still available, see our website for more information).
In a bit of exciting news, we spent the last several months working with a collective of people associated with Indy Media Chiapas on a radio documentary about the tenth anniversary of the uprising. We're proud to say that on New Years day, the English language version of the piece played on Free Speech Radio News across the US. Since then, the Spanish version has been broadcast across Mexico, in Bolivia, Argentina, Italy and Denmark. If you would like to listen to the piece, you can download it from the Free Speech Radio News site. It is called EZLN Ten Years later.
In this newsletter, you will find:
I. New Volunteer Opportunity: The Indigenous Photo Archive and Lok'tamayach
II. ACTION ALERT: Police Invade Autonomous Community
III. Analysis: Immigration and Global Justice
IV. Welcome Kate O'Donnell
V. Food: Black Bean Soup, or how they like it here in Mexico
